GIVING computing to the poor
Learn from recent attempts to bring Computing to the Poor.
1. An American "laptop to every child" gave out millions of $ worth of laptops to an African community. The first day the kids excitedly played with them. Next day their parents 'sold' them for cig's and food.
Within one week, what had not gone up in smoke, had been shat out.
2. In India, a computing research project was established and left Internet connection on the outside of the office door. The first night a couple of kids were seen entertained all night. Within one week there were a group around each terminal, exploring the internet and learning English.
Just to be really clear, 1 had lots of instruction in relevant languages. 2 had zero instructions, in an area that did not speak any English.

Why Aboriginal Kids cannot 'get' computing.
We all know that computing is the future for all employment. Every major corporation is now essentially composed mainly of software.
So how do the 'kids of today' manage to make megga-bucks? They certainly did not learn it in school and their parents still ask their kids how to turn on the VCR.
We worry about them being socially withdrawn, so they do not LEARN from other kids.
Everyone learns from playing, so why think that Aboriginal kids are any less capable of making millions, than kids from a middle class white Australian? Post if you think you know - I cannot think of any.
Congratulations to Abbot's Government on stopping $1.2Billion folly
Seriously, after blowing $120 mill on the previous Government's strategy to get people into a job - for just 6 months, with an average cost of $433,000 per person, what else would anyone with half a brain, do.
Since my early teenage days, I, and millions of others, have tried to find an equitable solution. There are exactly the same problems in every country I have investigated, all with huge $ attempts and virtually no success.
Yet we now, not only split atoms but can manipulate them, 3D, into anything, with Nano-Robots. We can get anyone's DNA for a few bucks. We can and do, erect housing, infrastructure (dunnys, electricity and water)and feed vast numbers of displaces peoples overnight.
We live in an Age of Abundance yet some still feel compelled to Create Jobs.
Hello World, Jobs are disappearing faster than dianasors (I can't spell, but neither can blogger)
And thak heavens - I never liked being forced into any Big Brother rules.
